Bexley fail to rob bank
VP day at HSBC results in a win with interest for bank
Another parky day saw this correspondent find his baggiest trousers to partake of another rugby club meal. Cleverly though, I made sure I was accompanied by our esteemed coach and LVP Jerry Stevens, making me look like Clara Delvigne by comparison. Thanks to HSBC for their hospitality.
One of the opposition props was massive; his muscles had muscles. A pair of rugby shorts on this 'Hulk' looked like hot pants on him. Mind if those shorts cost him a tenner, approximately 7 quids worth was being 'chewed' up.
Uncharacteristically though for Bexley, we actually got off to a poor start; a much changed team (by necessity) falling of the early tackles, going 27-0 down before half time. The opposition centres and open-side flanker being particularly adept at breaking through. Jon Light put in a great try saving tackle though.
However the second half (period, bit, - whatever) of the first half though saw Bexley really start to assert themselves. The scrums were awesome, and there was good catching and driving from the line out. Only superb Bank defence denying Bexley any point scoring opportunities. In fact Bexley were getting so confident in the line out they dispensed with normal throwing in, choosing to ricochet the ball of players heads first before being caught. Vimto rugby at its finest!
The second half carried on in the same vain, Bexley set piece dominance being thwarted by superb HSBC defence, and classy Bank backs cutting us to shreds. That is except when Jim Smith is at full back. I don't know what he was doing there but flaming good job he was, perhaps he was sniffing for truffles. We also found out what happens when the green things battle it out; Shrek mullers the Hulk.
The final score was 46-0, which was not a truly accurate picture of the Bex performance. An uncharacteristic bad start really sowed the seeds for the rest of the match. But we stuck at it, and received many complimentary comments from the opposition fans. It is just that Bank were as good without the ball as they were with it. We weren't. But we still have well within us to stay up this season.
The next job was for me to try and lose some weight before our own LVP day.
